The General Mobile Radio Service, or GMRS, as its commonly referred to, is a licensed radio service that allows users to operate in a given set of channels in the UHF band. Unlike HAM (amateur radio) there is no need for testing before you obtain a license.
The current fee for a GMRS license is $35 for a 10-year period. Once you are granted a call sign, the license can be used by anyone in your immediate family.
GMRS is a great option for those wanting to keep in touch with family weather at home, or on a hiking trip. With its maximum output of 50 watts, and the permitted use of repeaters, GMRS is a great service to use where cellular coverage is lacking, or places with no coverage it all. This makes it a great option for those that want to use the radios as backup communications to their existing Wi-Fi, or LTE services.
As is the case with any LMR service many factors play into the efectiveness of the coverage area.
