The sonim XP8 is a phone that definitely feels like it could take a beating and keep on working. The inner frame of the phone feels more like a 2-way radio then a smartphone, and with the dedicated push-to-talk (PTT) button and proprietary microphone connector on the side, it acts much like one too.
Even though the XP series from Sonim works only in the LTE band and relies on apps for PTT service rather than traditional RF radio frequencies, it definitely blurs the line between phone and radio.
Sonim XP8 Review: The Industrial Beast That Refuses to Quit
You can tell as soon as you have the Sonim XP8 in your hand that it’s not the kind of phone that's going to be thrown in your face via commercials or giant displays in your local carrier store. In my opinion, it feels like a hybrid between a smartphone and a two-way radio. It is purpose-built for industries that need tough devices where a traditional iPhone or flagship Samsung wouldn't be as easy to use via PTT and, without a heavy-duty case, simply would not thrive in these conditions. It’s no wonder this device is the go-to choice for industries like public safety, factories, and field work for local power and gas providers.
Built for the Front Lines
The physical design of the XP8 screams "utility." It’s built to be operated in high-stress environments where touchscreen finesse isn't always an option. From the first time you pick it up, the phone feels incredibly comfortable, even with large work gloves. It’s a solid 11.82 oz beast that won't break a sweat if dropped on concrete, featuring a 5.0-inch 1080p display built with Gorilla Glass 3 for durability.
The Overview
The Left Side features a power button, a large tactile Push-to-Talk (PTT) button, and volume rockers. The right side houses a proprietary screw-in heavy-duty connector for speaker mics and professional accessories. Below that is a quick-deploy camera key and a secondary programmable button.
On the front face you are met with actual physical keys for traditional Android navigation. These keys sit right in front of a massive, dual front-facing 100dB+ speaker system that you won't have any problem hearing in noisy environments.
Finally, on the rear you will find a large, sealed battery door—secured by a single flathead screw—hides a massive 4900 mAh removable battery. It offers up to 35 hours of talk time, ensuring you stay connected through long shifts. You’ll also find the 12 MP main camera and flash, paired with an 8 MP front camera for field reporting.
Performance & Durability
Even with its rugged build, the internal Snapdragon 630 chipset and 4GB of RAM keep things moving smoothly. One thing to note for those using heavy-duty cases: because the buttons are often recessed to prevent accidental triggers, you may have to give them a little bit of an extra hard press. If you're using the PTT key, make sure you're holding it down until you're completely done talking to ensure your message gets through.
On the plus side, I’ve tested various speaker mics with the XP8 and the connection is rock-solid—perfect for staying active on Zello without a hitch. If you don't want to test your luck with one of the random network radios for Zello floating around eBay and other marketplaces, picking up a used XP8 is a great way to get your foot in the door. It gives you the familiar Android smartphone experience everyone knows, just in a much larger, PTT-adapted body.
Still Relevant?
While it was originally released back in 2018, there is still a significant market for this device. It serves as a fantastic workhorse for those not yet ready to jump to the XP10. A major plus for its longevity is the software support. Although it launched on Android 7.0, it was recently upgraded to Android 10, which serves as its newest and last major operating system update.
Whether you’re a first responder or a field technician, the Sonim XP8 remains a legendary piece of kit that values function and durability above all else.
